5e monster conversion: Jungle Giant

So I hear we are going to Chult this fall? Is that right?

Well then, fellow DM’s, we’re going to need a Jungle Giant.

No. Come on. Not that guy.

Jungle Giants first appeared in 2e’s Al-Qadim Appendix for the Monstrous Compendium, and were later renamed Forest Giants in 3e’s Monster Manual II. They were portrayed as hunters with a ravenous carnivorous appetite who would kill and eat any living thing in the jungle. Their preferred method of attack was to hide in the trees with a giant longbow and paralyze their unsuspecting prey with poisoned arrows. If caught up in melee, they’d swing away with a tree stump. These guys don’t care–they just want to eat.

For my 5e conversion I’ve made them a Challenge 6 creature, with multiattacks on both melee and ranged attacks. They get camouflaged in the jungle, can ambush surprised opponents, and have proficiencies in Stealth and Athletics.

If you’re going to take some PC’s to the jungles of Chult, this may be a nice monster to throw in the mix. Who knows, maybe they can tangle it up with some dinosaurs. Enjoy!
