Great discussion. I too was raised on 2e and wish they would have reprinted the first books as opposed to the reprinting the reprints (ahh the irony).
A new system that was just released yesterday might be of interest to you if your looking to pull out your older D&D campaign settings as well as modules and have little to no conversion needed.

So far still reading it and digesting but it really does look like it is going to work well with all OSR type material with little work on the DM and it also integrates some of the really nice narrative stuff that you see in a lot of the newer “indie” type games.
