So as most of us thought, the release date for Dungeons and Dragons 5th Ed. has been announced, and the game lands on the nebulous “Summer 2014″ date… which is clearly a Gencon launch. Here’s the cryptic release… Why cryptic? Let’s talk after you read it…

Wizards of the Coast Announces Thrilling

Dungeons & Dragons Launch for Summer 2014

Players fight the most fearsome monster of all time

in an exciting multi-platform gaming experience

December 19, 2013 – Renton, WA – Wizards of the Coast today announced that the highly-anticipated new rules system for Dungeons & Dragons will release in summer 2014.  After nearly two years of an open public playtest and more than 175,000 playtest participants, the rules are complete. Players will be immersed in rich storytelling experiences across multiple gaming platforms as they face off against the most fearsome monster of all time.

“Just like a perfectly balanced party, Wizards has worked cohesively with fans, designers and partners to create the next generation of D&D,” said Nathan Stewart, Brand Director for Dungeons & Dragons. “We whole-heartedly thank all of the play test participants, whose feedback has proven instrumental in shaping the future of Dungeons & Dragons.”

More information about the exciting Dungeons & Dragons entertainment offerings will be available in early 2014. To learn more about D&D, visit dungeonsanddragons.com.

Okay, so… Lots going on there. What’s up with this? “Players will be immersed in rich storytelling experiences across multiple gaming platforms as they face off against the most fearsome monster of all time.”

Multiple Gaming Platforms? I smell PDFs at launch, and electronic gaming of some sort, maybe a VTT campaign or something. Also, “monster” is singular and shows up twice in the release. Typo? I’m not so sure.  What does it mean? Good question.

Here’s what I’m predicting… In my opinion, DnDClassics was built as a web store earlier this year to test its infrastructure as a way to sell DnD pdf’s, and with 5e we’ll see the game launch both digitally and in print at the same time. Multiple platforms? There you go. Monster? I don’t know. I put in a question to WOTCs PR to clarify…

So that’s what I predict. Gencon and pdfs at launch. Lets see if I get it right like I got my last prediction... :)
