I’m not sure what’s going on at WOTC, but the fun & interesting announcements keep on coming.
Now, in support of the Gygax Memorial Fund, WOTC is planning on releasing the 1st ED. PHB, DMG, and MM.
The release date is this April, and it looks like it’ll be a short print run available at hobby stores in North America only.
I wonder if this is some kind of market research…. These are interesting developments.

Interesting idea about this being just a bit of market research. Easy way to see if folks that want the older editions put their money where their mouth is. I think I will be making a trek to the local gaming store for this. Now to figure out which ones are still open and will have these!

I hope the market research angle is obvious to everyone. This is going to give them hard numbers about who’s out there, paying attention and buying!
This could even be market research for 5th edition! To see if anybody still cares about the AD&D playstyle.
My mind is swimming with all the possibilities that could come to pass if this is successful: old modules, new modules, a return to AD&D as a supported gameline, B/X reprints, oD&D reprints. These are all on the table now! It’s a different world today than it was yesterday.

Heh, wasn’t obvious to me, but it makes perfect sense. A limited release to protect themselves a bit and an excellent chance to see how well they sell to gauge market appetite. It really seems like a win-win all around to me.

I hope this isn’t market research for 5E because I love AD&D and would love to see some of its elements in 5E rules modules but I have no use for reprints of the AD&D rules. I have 2 copies of most books already. What I want to see is updated versions of 1st Edition adventures, either updated to 4E or 5E rules. I would buy those but I won’t likely buy these reprints, not at the price listed.

Count me in. When I was a kid we would scrape together enough money to buy a module for the dm. DM was the kid that could afford the books. Times were tight in 70s Midwest.
Now I want all the things I couldnt have as a kid.

I’ve seen the covers. They look awesome.
I know they have no reason to, but I hope they reprint 2nd ed too. Don’t be a whack-o, calculate your THAC0.

$35 seems a bit steep. Especially if you can get copies of the original books online for cheaper. I’m disappointed. How about making the game affordable?

Wow this is awesome news.
I have never looked at 1st edition stuff before but I think that would be super intriguing. I always was a fan of the vintage AD&D stuff after all.
I will be on the lookout for sure.
