Wonderful advice. I’ve been a DM for almost a year and I truly acknowledge the truth of each. Particularly, when it comes to knowing your monsters. I’ve been embarrassed several times with myself, because I’ve had higher expectations on a particular type of new monster and when the time comes to use it in an encounter, I forget a trait. Happened a couple months ago when running “Gates of Neverdeath” for the Neverwinter campaign: for weeks I was excited on the new ash zombies, only to forget their ash puff when they become bloodied. My players did not notice but I was hating myself afterwards.

I adopted the Initiative pre-rolling almost six months ago. A great time saver indeed.

These are brilliant tips. In the interest of keeping our game going, I’m currently on a rotating schedule with a very experienced DM and it’s pretty intimidating; I’ve only run a session here or there before this. My first campaign went okay but I fell prey to all sorts of newbie mistakes (which unfortunately I knew were happening, but didn’t have the experience to fix). These tips sound like the list of things I always forget to do, that leave me scrambling on tilt — which causes me to totally space something else that was probably more important. Thankfully everyone in my group is pretty forgiving, including the other DM, who is playing when he’s not DMing.
